Looking at the recipes, the most important criterion is whether the combination of ingredients looks promising enough to produce a tasty dish (another criterion is whether the boyfriend will eat it, but that is a can of worms I will not open at this point).

But very often, and I think for many people, an important criterion is whether the ratio of effort and the tastiness of the resulting dish is favourable. For example, one dish with a very favourable ratio is some variant of “minestrone.” In my rendition, it consists of throwing together some vegetables and perhaps a bit of smoked bacon; add some pasta or potato, finish off with parsley and a drizzle of olive oil… For winter, I cannot think of an easier, yet more satisfying dish to make, and this is why I go back to it over and over again.

Tarte Tatin

This cake is a classic, and for all the right reasons. And if you make it with shop-bought puff pastry, it makes for quite an easy and impressive dessert.

I am kicking myself now for not taking a photo when I made this, but I was so into it at the dinner party where I made it, I simply forgot. It looked stunning, and I am sure there will be additional opportunities to take photos.

A flower bouquet, my way

It makes me very happy to stumble upon a cake recipe that is both stunning and simple to make. It is not that I do not enjoy a challenge—on the contrary—but the beauty of simplicity is something I can readily appreciate. My Mom found this recipe on Youtube: it is not unusual that there is something useful in the 300 hours of video that are uploaded every minute. When my Dad sent me the photos and the link, I was hooked: I do not remember the last time I was so thrilled by a recipe, so it did not take long for the first try.

Baklava

This recipe is not for the faint of heart, or for the diabetics. However, apart from being extremely sweet, the flavours are really nice. Strange how you can still recognize the subtlety of cinnamon, cloves, and lime zest despite the shocking amounts of sugar.
